Name: Jean Bowen
Nickname: Jeanie
Age: Early/Mid-Twenties
Gender: Female (transwoman)
Species: Satyr
Nationality: Welsh
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 117 lbs
Orientation: Bisexual
Relationship Status: Taken
Occupation: Whatever she can get -- sometimes unemployed
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Jean is a short, somewhat stocky person. Though she's lean, and has a build akin to a boxer, she's also clearly been out of the ring for a while. On top of this, lack of money means she's unable to eat reliably, adding to her being close to underweight.
As she's entirely unable to afford hormones, let alone surgery, she has a hard time passing as female. She hasn't got terribly wide shoulders but they're broader than most women's. Her jawline is fairly masculine, her chest is flat and she's got no feminine curves to speak of.
Her pale skin practically covered in freckles, though besides that and a few small scars around her knuckles and face she doesn't have many blemishes on her skin. There's significant scarring at the end of her short, fluffy tail, but it's entirely hidden by the appendage's hair. The tail is about 6 1/2 inches long.
PERSONALITY
Jean is a whole lot of attitude packed into a short satyr. She's got a short fuse, and a generally jumpy, on-edge demeanor when outside her own home. She's easily startled, and more easily made angry. Though she rarely holds grudges against people who are well meaning or don't know better, those that deliberately annoy or insult her are entirely likely to be on the receiving end of a surprisingly strong punch.
While she does her best to appear tough and in control, underneath that she's terribly insecure. Lashing out at people is generally her way of dealing with this, at least when it comes to people she doesn't know so well, but it's mainly how she avoids completely breaking down while in public. In the privacy of her own home, she's more likely to fall apart, though she still keeps a number of barriers up that next to no one is able to pull down.
Her personality stems mainly from a mix of trauma and a need to appear as strong as possible, but getting to know her reveals the kind of person she should be without these issues; kind of goofy, a sucker for bad and dirty jokes, a fan of cheesy pop and cheesier romance novels, a hopeless romantic who wants nothing more than to have a family of her own. Despite a tough shell over a broken spirit, she's kept enough intact that she's able to push through most of what life throws at her--especially now that she's through the worst of it.
PERSONAL HISTORY
Born William Bowen, on a small farm outside a similarly small town in Wales, a covert glamour kept the child relatively normal through her early life. Though her father only stuck around until she was around six, and her mother had trouble supporting herself and a child at first, there wasn't much turbulence in her very early childhood. It wasn't until she got a little older that things started to go downhill.
Around the age of nine Jean was realizing something wasn't quite right with her; everything about being a "boy" felt uncomfortable and wrong. It wouldn't be for a while yet that she'd realize what this feeling was, but it made a lot of what should have been normal social interaction terribly awkward for her. It was also around this time that school caused a divide among peer groups that singled out those without good social links--Jean among them--as targets for the resident bullies. The most notorious of these groups was led by a kid named Joshua, who no one, not even other bullies, dared to pick a fight with.
Jean was the target of quite a bit of bullying. As she was still living as "he" at the time, much of it was physical, and it only got worse as she got older. It wasn't until she reached puberty that it got genuinely dangerous, though. It was at this point, at the age of thirteen, that her father's glamour finally wore off. There was a period of a couple of weeks where Jean refused to go to school, and for a couple days she even refused to leave her room. Needless to say her mother was shocked by her appearance; but, nevertheless, she remained as loving as she'd ever been, if a bit clueless about just about everything her child was going through.
Not more than two weeks after the glamour stopped working, Jean's father returned, just long enough to teach her how to hide her appearance herself. Though it was clear he too was a satyr, he managed to dodge any and all questions Jean tried to ask him, and left her just as confused as when he arrived, if not more so. Still, she was able to return to school at that point, whether she wanted to or not.
At this point, not only did she have to deal with the dual issues of being transgender and a no-longer-mythical being, she had to deal with puberty as the wrong gender and the continued bullying from her peers. At this time she decided to start taking boxing lessons from a gym teacher, in order to learn to defend herself. It worked, briefly, but the next time Joshua targeted her he simply brought more friends, and she still ended up getting beaten up.
While her boxing skills improved, so did Joshua's tactics. She found herself getting jumped on her way to and from different places so often that she started taking unconventional routes just to try and avoid running into the bullies. It worked for a while, until one day not long after she'd turned fifteen when Joshua's group managed to get the jump on her as she was on her way home. The beating wasn't as bad as it could have been at first--that was until her glamour gave out. Amidst the shock someone egged one of the boys into restarting the fight, and Jean was left with a nose and a couple of fingers broken.
Though there was a spread of rumors about Jean being a freak, it seemed the bullies were smart enough not to say exactly what they saw, since it was clear no one would believe them. Instead they once more changed tactics, starting to taunt her about being a "filthy animal" and "nothing but a goat." Dealing with the bullies was tough, but it was something she felt she could handle, even with the near-daily beatings. Dealing with her gender was something else entirely; her mother, while caring, was clueless and never quite grasped the concept. Her peers were never going to understand, and she had no friends to talk to. When she was sixteen she dared to try on one of her mom's dresses. She found herself wandering the field near her home, only to run into Joshua and a few of his goons.
In the ensuing chase, someone managed to get into the shed outside her house and grabbed her mother's hedge clippers. At first it seemed like they just wanted to threaten Jean into showing her true self, but when she did they held her down and, after a fairly thorough beating, managed to sever about half her tail. Jean's mother came home to find the teen on the kitchen floor, barely conscious, and rushed her to a neighbor who was an experienced vet; probably the only person she felt she could trust not to go talking about Jean's strange anatomy. Though she retained mobility in her tail, it would never cease to be terribly sensitive, nearly impossible to touch without discomfort or pain. It inevitably became a way for the bullies to torment her, when they got the chance to grab or pull it.
She didn't wait much longer after that to run. She found herself with nothing but a backpack of spare clothes and a bit of food, hitchhiking on the only highway away from town, to wherever she could go. She persisted despite some close encounters with dangerous types, eventually managing to stow away on a boat shipping goods to North America. After a long, arduous and nerve-racking trip, she found herself once more hitchhiking, now in a totally foreign place. It was a few months before she ended up in Nevada, where she fought her way into an underground boxing ring that seemed just inviting enough to not be terrifying.
Keeping the guise of a man, she fought and honed her skills, earning money along the way, and eventually finding herself sitting with the crowd (some of them other fighters she almost thought of as friends) watching the heavyweight champion win yet another fight. The man was eight feet tall, a real giant, and totally undefeated. It was the first time Jean had felt so strongly attracted to a person in her entire life. After a particularly good match, and a subsequent lightweight championship match that she ended up losing, she managed to catch the man in the locker room. He went by the title "Bridge Troll" in the ring, but introduced himself as Otto, and they exchanged small talk for a while. As Jean was changing, he suddenly asked her if she'd go out with him.
At the time people around her were still under the impression she was male, and the question took her so off guard that instead of answering, she hid herself in a nearby locker until Otto left. For a while nothing seemed to come of it other than conversation from then on being fairly awkward. After a particularly strenuous match, though, Jean hurt her left arm so badly that another serious fight would permanently cripple it, and she was forced to stop fighting. At this point, at the age of 19 and without any normal work experience, Jean bounced from one job to the next, unable to hold one down thanks to her terrible attitude around customers. It was almost two years before she was suddenly contacted by Otto, with a request to meet her somewhere.
As it turned out the former champion had wanted out of the admittedly dangerous and illegal ring for some time, but only a few months previous had managed to find a way, and had deliberated over contacting Jean since. They had a long talk, where they caught up and Jean opened up about her identity, which led to the confession that Otto absolutely didn't care, and wanted to go out with her anyway. Four months later he was living in Jean's apartment, helping the two get by with his passion for tailoring. It was later revealed to each what they were--slip-ups with glamour lead to Otto finding out she was a satyr, and Jean to finding out Otto was a troll. Neither minded, as it meant there were no worries of outliving the other. They continue to scrape by with the bare minimum needed to sustain themselves, and though their funds are as low as ever their relationship only grows stronger.
